This experience will involve a comprehensive tour of the province of KZN, including the sights and sounds of the Natal Midlands, the Drakensberg, the battlefields, Zululand and areas of our beautiful coastline. It will start with your pick up at the airport or your hotel, followed by 7 days of touring this magnificent province. It will be an all inclusive package apart from lunch, drinks and entrance fees.
You will be picked up at the airport and driven up the coast to the Giants Castle in the central Drakensberg area. This leisurely drive will take us up to Pietermaritzburg, Nottingham Road, Rosetta and then into the mountains. We will overnight at Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse and experience a gourmet’s delight before calling it a day.
After breakfast we will head off to Giants Castle Nature reserve and stretch our legs on a walk to the Main Cave’s Bushman museum. After lunch we will head off to the Anglo Zulu battlefields of Dundee. We will pass the site of Churchill’s capture, Colenso and Ladysmith and then head off to our next overnight stop, Fugitives Drift.
This day will be dedicated to touring the battlefields of Isandhlwana and Rourkes Drift, and ending back at Fugitives Drift for our overnight stop. One will see the sight of the massacre of the British forces at the atmospheric Isandhlwana, to the heroic stand of Rourkes drift in which 11 VC’s were awarded, and onto the saving of the colours by Melvill and Coghill, who were also to receive VC’s for their actions.
We know head off on the next leg of our journey to the coast of Zululand and the Unesco World Heritage site of St. Lucia. We will go via Babanago, and Empangeni, and after a 5 hour trip we will arrive at the Unesco World Heritage Site of St Lucia, were we will overnight.
After breakfast we will take a 32km drive through the iSimangaliso Wetlands Park, stopping at the Crocodile centre to view some of the biggest crocodiles in the country and then through to Cape Vidal stopping at Mission Rocks to see all 5 eco-systems; Lakes, estuaries, grasslands, subtropical forests and ocean. The sandy beaches are endless and the sea pristine, so take your sun tan lotion, towel and costumes. We will have a late braai, monkeys willing, and slowly meander back to St. Lucia after a wonderful day’s game viewing, swimming, walking and sun tanning. You will have an evening at your leisure or can take a night drive though the reserve. Just be aware that hippo’s wander around the town at night, and leopard spoor is often picked up in the area!
We will take a slow cruise up the St Lucia estuary, either by kayak or double decker cruising boat, picking up close encounters with hippo and crocodile, or the African Fish eagle. Then we will wind our way up to all inclusive (except premium drinks) Rhino Sands Safari Camp in the Manyoni Reserve in time for lunch. After checking in and a short nap, we will then have tea and go on an evening / night drive with the resident ranger. After winding our way back to the lodge, we will have a meal around the boma, weather willing, and then be escorted to our luxury tent to settle in for the night.
After an early wakeup call and coffee and rusks we will head out for the second of our guided drives around the big 5 reserve, arriving back mid morning for a hearty breakfast. After checking out we will head back to the Oyster Box in Umhlanga Rocks, getting to the hotel at about 5 pm.
